des·per·a·tion
Noun: A state of despair, typically one that results in rash or extreme behavior.
Synonyms: despair - hopelessness - despondency

Desperation for Randle McMurphy to get out of prison so he faked insanity.
Desperation for power between Nurse Ratched and McMurphy.
Desperation for the other inhabitants of the ward to at least try to do something - to have the power and courage to do things for themselves and leave the ward (a lot of them were voluntarily there).
Desperation to escape.
Desperation when Nurse Ratched sends McMurphy into a state of despair when she blames him for Billys death.
Desperation when Chief smothers McMurphy as an act of mercy and then find the strength to escape.

I wanted to show this through the visual background- created with water and nail polish. I thought it was appropriate how some clung together whilst the rest were almost lost on their own. I used black because of the dark underlying theme and red because of the obvious presence of blood.

The skull was created to show an extreme that desperation can result in whilst the bow suggests authority in the ward, particularly in the 3 aides who use vicious, manipulative, and degrading behaviour towards the patients.
